Part 1: The Physical Engineering Aspect – Managing Scratches on Otis Gen2 Belts otis gen2 scratch
Otis uses a "PULSE" system (Resistance Based Inspection) to monitor these belts 24/7 and alert technicians if the belt’s integrity is compromised. 2. Aesthetic and Durability Review
Over extended periods, exposure to high temperatures, improper cleaning chemicals, or extreme humidity can cause the polyurethane jacket to degrade or harden. As the material loses its elasticity, micro-cracks develop. When these brittle sections pass over the tight radius of the small drive sheave, the surface can flake or score, mimicking a mechanical scratch. Over time, the belt surface may show signs of burnishing where the belt contacts the sheave. This is normal. The belt might also accumulate dirt. Cleaning instructions from Otis specify that belts should only be cleaned with soap and water when they get dirty, avoiding harsh chemicals that could degrade the polyurethane.
Visible "shadows" or imprints of the steel cords on the belt surface indicate significant wear or material aging.
These are shallow, linear marks on the polyurethane surface that do not penetrate down to the inner steel cords. They generally do not compromise the lifting capacity or safety of the elevator but indicate a tracking or debris issue that must be resolved.
